I guess you could say I’ve been involved in-home improvement projects quite often in my life. At this very minute my husband is finishing the drywall in our living room, and will soon be painting it. While it’s great to see the finished product, the process can be very messy.

There are a few simple ways to give the appearance of a higher ceiling in your home. Consider painting vertical stripes on the walls, or adding a floor lamp. Doing this creates the illusion of height. Your eyes focus on the lines and make the ceilings look like they are higher.

When it comes to home improvement, be sure to weigh the cost of purchasing CFL bulbs for your home. While they do save energy because of lower wattage usage, the upfront cost is higher than regular bulbs. Also, they may pose a health hazard to you if ever broken due to the amount of mercury used inside the bulb.

Make your child a room-sized blackboard! It will provide hours of entertainment and offer interest to practically any room. All you have to do is paint a section of a wall with paint that’s made especially for blackboards. If you want, you can even frame it in with molding to give it that professional look.

During summertime, go outside and pick some wildflowers. Place the wildflowers between the pages of an old and unwanted phonebook. Pile about 50 to 60 pounds of books on top of the phonebook to press the flowers dry. After about a week or two of pressing, adhere your flowers to a piece of cardstock and hang them in your room. They create a great focal point as well as a nature friendly approach to home decorating.

If you have tiles in your bathroom, make sure to use bath rugs in front of your toilet and bathtub. Adding bath rugs not only adds a touch of personality to your bathroom, but also keeps you from slipping and falling; try rugs with different patterns and designs for a look that is uniquely your own.

When deciding what exterior renovations a home needs to make it saleable, step out to the curb and take a picture. The picture on your listing is the first exposure any potential buyers will have to your home. If your picture shows a dingy house with overgrown landscaping, fix it!

Spice up your mantelpiece by decorating it with similarly grouped items. Collect objects that are similar in nature such as wood items, only items with letters on them, items that are old fashioned or different sized decorative paper boxes. They create an interesting focal point near your fireplace and can prove to be conversation pieces.

We have a home which is over 100 years old and updating it has been an ongoing process over the past five years. We have a new dining room, two new bathrooms and half of a new kitchen. Recently, my husband installed four new windows and put new siding on half of the house. I can’t wait for the whole thing to be done!
